Richard Thompson breaks a string at the Ark in Ann Arbor in Summer 1988

I spent part of summer 1988 at my mother's house in Ann Arbor, Michigan. One concert I remember going to while there was a solo acoustic show at the Ark by English singer-songwriter Richard Thompson, whom I had seen a few years earlier with his band at Wolfgang's in San Francisco. I remember few details of the Ark concert, but I do remember that when he broke a string, he checked his back pocket and sighed that he'd forgotten to put backup strings there. So he got the crowd singing "Twist and Shout", ran off stage during the bridge, and came back with strings just in time for the last verse. (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 22 December 2024).
