Just down the street from the stable in Rümmingen, Germany, where my daughters have their riding lessons is a café run by Jami and Rona, two immigrants to Germany from Afghanistan. This evening, they had a dinner with delicious Afghani cuisine, which Andrea and I went to. Of the many dishes in the buffet, my favorite was a lamb in a sauce with whole green grapes. On the wall of the tent they set up outside the café hung a picture that Jami told me he had commissioned an artist to paint: it depicted one of the two Buddhas of Bamiyan there were blown up by the Taliban in March 2001.
