In her April 23 "Letter from an American", Heather Cox Richardson wonders about "Trump's
emphasis on dramatic cures for Covid-19", such as hydroxychloroquine or his
remark about injecting bleach: "And then I see the disinfectant where it
knocks it out in a minute." Trump wants a heroic solution to a situation
that has no place for individuals who address problems with decisive, instinctive
action. His trivial understanding of drama leaves out the hero's tragic hubris
that leads to his downfall; instead, he sees only the myth of the brilliant
flash of insight that would confirm, as he claimed in 2016 at the Republican National
Convention, that "I alone can fix it." (Andrew Shields, #111words, 24
April)
