An improvised "Red Wheelbarrow" performance with students this morning

For a poetry class this morning, I handed each arriving student a strip of paper with either the title, a line, or a stanza of William Carlos Williams's "The Red Wheelbarrow"; there were also three with the full poem, Williams's "This Is Just To Say", and Mary Ruefle's "Red". I said: "The performance has already started. Recite what's on your piece of paper as often as you like, until the performance ends." Things started slowly, though one student was enthusiastically calling out, "chickens!" When I started to conduct them, two students started singing, and by the time we finished with readings of all three poems, we'd had a great time improvising.
