Joe Zawinul died today at 75. Here's Weather Report doing "Birdland", the song that immediately started singing through my mind, live in Germany in 1978.

Sad news indeed Andrew. Joe studied piano and violin at the Wiener Konservatorium, so he had a good grounding in classical music before moving to Boston in 1959 and taking up jazz. I've just got a CD of 'Music for Two Pianos' where he plays with Friedrich Gulda. A very good musician.
