A blackboard from my class and the discussion of it in my colleague’s class

In class this morning, I filled a blackboard with notes on the third paragraph of Charles Dickens's "Great Expectations" (1861), mostly on metaphor and the distinction between Pip the child as a character and Pip the middle-aged adult as a narrator. Later, my colleague Ridvan Askin, who taught the next class in the same room, mentioned to me that he had begun his class by asking the students if they knew what my class had been about. The only word that would have given it away was "Pip", but Ridvan said that none of the students knew him as the protagonist of Dickens's novel (though they had heard of the novel). (Andrew Shields, #111Words, 8 April 2025)
