There are always brief statements when a Duolingo exercise is loading on the app. One says something to the effect that there are more people in the United States learning foreign languages with Duolingo than in schools. My second thought was that that's not very surprising: Duolingo is used by people of all ages, while schools teach foreign languages only to those eighteen and under. But my first thought was that it is also an effect of the underfunding or elimination of the public teaching of foreign languages in the United States, which is part of the ongoing drive for the privatization of public goods there (and in other countries, too).
