The Tate is like a cartoon, I can;t remember the name of the cartoonist but I can see it in my mind's eye. I also love the first Simic one.

But I might go for "Insurance." It is economical, evocative, musical, and packed with unspoken meaning.Ms Baroquehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01836227454899083962noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20782819.post-13202940642180438122008-04-29T07:52:00.000+02:002008-04-29T07:52:00.000+02:00TreasonTreasonRChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14678775084337683859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20782819.post-79237244113144384192008-04-28T13:19:00.000+02:002008-04-28T13:19:00.000+02:00I very much like 'Night. I have enjoyed the work of both these poets in the past (Maxwell being one of my favorite contemporary poets, in fact), and I enjoyed both their poems here, but Maxwell's gets my nod because this poem is not like any of his other work, while Kirby's is, if you will, a fine example of a Kirby poem. So for not sounding like a Maxwell poem, Maxwell's gets my vote.Andrew Shieldshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02804655739574694901noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20782819.post-29430596157901836562008-04-28T01:22:00.000+02:002008-04-28T01:22:00.000+02:00Elaine SextonElaine SextonColin Willhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15627539650929533832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20782819.post-17006706903106759382008-04-28T00:40:00.000+02:002008-04-28T00:40:00.000+02:00Treason, by James Tate, with Night. Fire, by Elaine Sexton as my runner-up.

Treason made me laugh & say "I really like that!" out loud (Bruce asked what I was talking about & I had him read it when I was done with all the poems.)

Night. Fire has really nice rhythm.

I also liked The Secret Room, by David Kirby, but I thought it took a little too long, for my taste, to get to the pay-off.Katy Loebrichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00107094782074333133noreply@blogger.com
